Depends on whether the pitcher is for the home troop or the visitors. The home squad pitcher will likely not pitch the ninth inning since home get last at bat, and the final at bat would not be needed. This would leave him pitching to 24 batter. A visiting pitcher would enjoy to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning, retiring 27 batters. Both cases would be score as nine innings.
i could see why people would put 27, but wouldnt it be 9? theres 9 batter in the lineup, so he wouldnt retire 27.

And to the ancestors that said that you don't have to complete the bottom partially of the inning if the home team is champion your right! LOL Only problem is that The home pitcher pitches the top off the inning and if the visit pitcher is the one throwing it then he will enjoy to pitch the bottom off the inning no issue what because if the visiting hurler is losing next he hasn't thrown a perfect spectator sport!
