Their union...the players association is arguably the strongest confederation in the country. The grouping is the reason their is no net cap as their is contained by other sports. So, basically their is no constraint to what they can make...and as long as team like the Yankees manufacture a lot of money they can afford the big payrolls that they have.
The better they are or the more talent a squad sees contained by the player the more he will be offered. If the franchise has more money later the offer will predictable be higher. The more mechendise, tickets, and consessions at the spectator sport help tilt money for the franchise. 50,000 people at a team game paying $50 for a ticket really adds up. Then if everyone buys a hot dog and a drink thats give or take a few $10 because they jack the prices up. Then they have jersey, balls, hat, and other items that can sell for roughly speaking an average of $20. It all add up.

I am really confused by the grades that you gave the players.
If you are doing it for their unharmed career, the position for Kaline makes sense and McLain's does not. If you are doing it for of late 1968 then McLain's status is fine and Kaline's is absolutely wrong.
McLain be a 31-game winner surrounded by 1968 but washed up and out of baseball 4 years subsequent. Kaline was hurt a large amount of 1968 and would not have be the starting rightfielder if Mickey Stanley was not such a great athlete that could move to shortstop.
1968 be definitely "The Year of the Pitcher"; the rude numbers were down everywhere. The rotation of McLain, Wilson, Lolich, and Sparma be the best in adjectives of baseball that year. As someone mentioned, that be the year of the pitcher (MLB lowered the mound for the following season because of the pitcher's dominance that year) but the Tigers could hit anybody and proved it all year long.
