depends on where on earth you ride how fast you ride, resistance of the pedals, and how much you drink.
3500 calories per pound.
5 pounds = 5*3500 = 17500 calories.
A 150 pound rider, riding at 15 mph burns about 690 calories per hour.
This resources the same rider would enjoy to ride 25 hours and 22 minutes continuously (at 15 mph, no breaks) to lose 5 pounds.
The secret is not simply exercise ... it's a variation in diet. You can't simply stop eating/drinking and expect to cover that giving of mileage. Choose healthy foods and put away lots of smaller meals. Well - Coming bad of an EX9 I can tell you that that bike is really rugged and super speedily!
BUT! Gary has pioneered another first, G2 Geometry. He single handedly push the industry again byusing a custom correct fork - this has be done in the motorcycle industry for years.
I can share you that if I have a customer interested contained by a five inch trail bike and they ride the Hi Fi, the love and buy the Hi Fi - It's hard to provide anything else next to it!
I would inspire you to ride them both, I think for the race your wanting to do the Hi Fi would probably be the way to travel.

They are both trek made bikes. Simply put this funds you should not buy either as trek, dispite its muti-million dollar company, have no idea how to create a honest mountain bike. Keep Looking! Seriously! I can give you so lots better options!
I would budge with a Gary Fisher Hi Fi Deluxe because i feel that Gary Fisher is a more trusted and more publicised.

While you will find plenty of information/advice at cycling forums (e.g., http://cyclingforums.com), I recommend going to your local bike shop(s) and trying out a few models yourself.
Generally, you want to try a hybrid (a cross between road bike and a mountain) from Specialized, Marin, Gary Fisher, Trek, Giant (IMHO, in that order). These are adjectives good, mostly equivalent, companies next to very similar configurations.
Your final choice will depend on
A. Which bike you're most comfortable beside: Plan on wearing the clothing you usually wear to bike, and take a try-out ride not less than 15 minutes.
B. Which bike shop ethnic group seem the most down-to-earth, friendly, and conversant. Remember, even after buying a bike, you'll be visiting them pretty regularly for spares/adjustment/repairs.
Under $1000 is tuff. Look for an older enduro. Maybe untimely 80's.
Check out Trekbikes.com. They have a few models lower than $1000 in both road and hybrids. And the website also have a dealer locator element.
You should be able to find Giant, Trek, KHS, and Specialized models contained by your price range. These are adjectives good companies.
I would be in motion with any Felt or Specialized.

For the riding you've described, this bike would be a great fit/function for you - I even outfitted a guy for the Pacific coast highway, on it's bigger brother; the Montare! To me, the bike is prooven!
if ur looking hardtail,fullsuspension or ridgid framed bikes to do the job. Then I suppose Specialised as a make are worthy for the hard tail free style,Trek are righteous for full sus,an hardtail as well. These two companies enjoy awide range to choose from. I my self enjoy had a hardrock, this be good for road use, and slightly good for tricks. Also have an FSR specialised blue, up graded the forks to "obsyst" carbon fiber. but snapped the frame, so in a minute got a trek full sus. it works resourcefully on all envirments, only change the tyres to suit. hope this help.
