Cycling Questions and Answers
In Shimano's Hollowtech crank, the crank arm connects with the axle. What's this type of connection called?
Question:I am curious about this type of connection that tightens around an axle. I'd also like to know if a connection of this type could be used at a slightly larger scale. Could this kind of connection be used to connect a cartridge inside a bike frame at the bottom bracket, for example?,
Answers:
It is called an octalink connection. Hollowtech has two (each crank)
Isis is another type that is similar
Hollowtech 2 is not octalink it is just a simple splined arrangement. It only attaches one crank (left) right side is moulded to the bottom bracket. see this link

It could possibly be used to mount the bottom bracket but it would require a locking ring to apply tension and there are the bearings to consider. The current system is simple and effective

How can I reorganize my fitness using a bike?
Question:I've just get a mountain bike and I want to use it to become fitter and lose some excess weight. I'm contained by my 20's and I've not done any kind of physical exercise contained by 8-10 years. I'd like to aim to be capable of ride in the London to Bristol event subsequent year (56 miles). Is this do-able for a novice? Can you point me to a website near any good solo training programmes? My plan is to start going out and doing 3 miles a hours of daylight increasing this in increments of a 2 miles a week. Until I can comfortably do 30 miles contained by three hours - what do you reckon?
Answers:
Forget about miles right in a minute and ride in expressions of time. Start by riding for a minimum of 1/2 hour a day, and ride at a stride that keeps your heart rate (HR) contained by the aerobic training zone. This zone is classified as about 70% of your maximum herat rate. You can carry a reasonable guess of your maximum by using the formula of 220 minus your age. Therefore, if you're 20, afterwards your max will be about 200, and 70% of that will be 140. You can attain cheap heart rate monitors that use a chest strap and a bike mount. I would recommend this highly. Go to a aporting commodities store and ask for cheap basic models, you don't involve the ones that have alarms, zone, calories, or bike computer functions (yet).
In order to save your HR in the right zone, use your gears prudently. If you see your HR getting to high, shift to an easier gear, and avoid steep or long hill.
On the weekends, try a longer ride, say 60 to 90 minutes. but don't tolerate your heart rate get above the 70% sap. Remember, you're trying to build endurance, not power.
After roughly a month of this - or at least 20 hours of total bike time, you can start to mix things up. Three night a week go for one hour rides at the 70% HR step, the other two go for 30 to 45 minutes, but do a few knotty efforts that push your heart rate up to 85 to 90%, but not for more than a few mintues at a time.
Try to attain 3-4 hours total in on the weekends, again keeping your heart rate not much more than 70%. At this time you should also bee looking for riding parters, ask nearly biking clubs in your nouns. You're much more likely to stick next to it if you're amoung friends.
Don't ride if you feel excessively tired or are sick. Don't try to 'make up the time' - if you miss a light of day, or two, just stick next to the schedule. Catching up on riding is approaching catching up on sleep, it doesn't work.
If you follow a plan similar to the above, you'll be able to do your 56 miler by the shutting of the summer unless you're in the 'obese' category or you own other health problems. If so, don't do anything until you consult a doctor.
obtain on your bike and ride it do not se excuses to not. A cd or dvd will not help you and near is not one that can get you on bikes one and only you can prevent excuses so get!
It may seem to be like abundantly at first, but 3 miles is very glib on a bike, Without anymore experience than biking 2 miles to school everyday for a few months, I completed a 50 mile ride on my mountain bike. You should start by riding 10-20 miles, or finding some nice hill or mountains to ride. Push your limits the best you can.
Get rotten the computer, and get on your bike ! The best program is to basically get out and ride ! Start bad slowly, and work your way up time by day... Yes, it's "do-able" ! But you'll own to cut down on sweets, junk foods, ands sodas...What are you waiting for?
