Why do AFL players wear shorter and tighter shorts than other football codes?

They are no longer as tight as they were. If you see 70's footage of the hobby those shorts just looked stinging.In my experience the women I know watch the spectator sport for the love of it and find it offensive that it's other said the tightness of their shorts was the solitary reason for watching.I alwys assumed they be more fitted cause it stops them one pulled at when they take a dignified mark.
It is function over form..but probably the women fans would inform you form over function!
