Requirements for Hole Location on the Putting Green
Q. What are the requirements for establishing a hole location on the putting green?
A. The USGA frequently receives requests for guidelines next to respect to selection of hole locations on the putting greens, outstandingly during competitions. There are no rules regarding hole locations, so within is no such thing as an "illegal" hole location. The USGA believes that heaps factors affect test of hole locations. The first and most important is perfect judgment surrounded by deciding what will bequeath fair results. Do not be tricky contained by locating holes. Following are specific points:
There must be enough putting green surface between the hole and the front and the sides of the green to accommodate the required shot. For example, if the hole requires a long iron or wood shot to the green, the hole should be located deeper within the green and further from its sides than should be the case if the hole requires a short pitch shot. In any covering, it is recommended that generally the hole be located at most minuscule four paces from any boundary of the green. If a bunker is close to the edge, or if the ground slopes away from the frame, the distance should be greater, especially if the shot is more than a pitch. Consideration should be given to fair opportunity for reclamation after a reasonably right shot that just misses the green.
typically courses use 5 yard as the minimum
i work at a golf course and we don't make the cup any closer than a pin length from the fringe
Why are golf ball dimpled?
Answers:
The shape and symmetry of the dimples is central to a ball's flight characteristics.
To allow the heavens to flow over the ball better so you can hit it farther
to prevent swing for long shots
It reduce drag
Allows them to fly further. And.. although its not mentioned I believe it allows them to fly straighter
The club commander imparts a backspin on the globe when it is hit. The dimples along the bottom of the spinning ball (moving forward) create drag while the dimples along the top of the bubble (moving toward the back) reduce drag. This cause the air beneath the ball to move slower than the heavens above the ball, thus cause a pressure differential which leads to hoist, similar to the effect an airplane's wing produces. This lift allows the globe to stay in the heavens for longer periods of time, resulting contained by longer shots.
The dimples reduces the heavens resistance to the surface of the ball and allow it to fly more accurately and be in motion further.
To make them cuter.
The dimples dispense the ball raise. It's an aerodynamic principle.
It's an aerodynamic thing. The more dimples the globe has, the further it will shift.
